| Event Name: | A Photo says 1000 words? The Ethics of Photojournalism |
| Description: | Southbank Centre is bringing together photographers and journalists to debate the role of the media in selecting and presenting images taken in conflict zones around the world.
This discussion accompanies the 2011 World Press Photo Exhibition at Royal Festival Hall. This year's winning photograph, by South African photographer Jodi Bieber, is a portrait of Bibi Aisha, a young woman from Afghanistan. It shows her face, which has been brutally disfigured by her husband in retribution for leaving the family home.
The photograph featured on the cover of TIME magazine. The image and accompanying headline sparked international debate, not only about the treatment of women in Afghanistan but about the legitimacy of using such a powerful and controversial image.
Speakers at this event include -
Jon Levy, Founder and Director, Foto8
Andrew Sanigar, Commissioning Editor, Thames & Hudson
