| Event Name: | All that Glisters is Gold! |
| Description: | n 1953, workers renovating rooms for Yeoman Warder lodgings in the Byward Tower stripped out a Victorian hearth to reveal a decorated Tudor fireplace. A restorer took a closer look at the medieval wall behind it and discovered an astonishing 14th-century mural painting under seven layers of limewash. Painted during the reign of Richard II, this royal wall painting is a rare survivor, especially given its unusually good state of preservation.
For conservation reasons, regular visitors are unable to see the wall painting in situ, but in this afternoon school you will be given an exclusive tour of the Byward Tower by Jane Spooner, who has spent several years piecing together the story of this unique mural. Conservators will also describe how the wall painting is conserved. In contrast with the Tower's reputation as a place of brutality and torture, this event reveals a different Tower, a palace adorned with rich paintings, full of symbolism.
This afternoon school includes light refreshments and entry to the Tower of London. |
