BIS members visit to Astrium

Event Name:BIS members visit to Astrium
Description:Taking advantage of Alistair Scott’s last week with Astrium, BIS Members are invited to visit the site to see some of the world’s largest communications satellites and most sophisticated science spacecraft being built.

Established in 1953 by De Havilland for the manufacture of spares for the Comet jet airliner, the site instantly turned itself over to building giant propellers, then missiles and finally the Blue Streak Rocket. At the same time it began developing small science spacecraft for Europe and then, as HSD, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics, became the prime contractor for all of Europe’s communications satellites.

The site now has some of the largest clean rooms in Europe and, with a £10million refurbishment programme due to be completed by mid October, it has some of the most advanced manufacture, assembly and integration facilities too.

For security reasons, and due to the rather tight timescales, this will be restricted to Members who are UK Passport holders. Tickets are limited to a total of 30 and will be issued on a first come basis.
