To quote the man himself: “Music is a means capable of expressing dark dramatism and pure rapture, suffering and ecstasy, fiery and cold fury, melancholy and wild merriment”. All these elements and more are to be found in this fascinating work. Contrasting this: two ‘Hommages à Mozart’, the charming wind quartet version of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, and Ibert’s 200th birthday present from 1956, a short study in Mozartean vitality refracted through the prism of mid-20th century Parisian harmonies.
