| Description: | China and India: Partners or Rivals?
India and China have agreed a bilateral trade target of $100bn by 2015, and the two countries will expand cooperation over infrastructure, the environment, information technology, telecommunications, investment and finance. However, significant obstacles to their development remain: Indian businesses, such as the conglomerate Tata, may be increasingly international, but internal markets are hindered by endemic corruption. China derives 35% of its GDP from exports, making it vulnerable to the economic slowdown in the west.
It is unclear whether authoritarian China and democratic India will be rivals or partners in the 21st century. They are separated by over 4,000 kilometres of disputed border. India’s support for the Dalai Lama raises protest in Beijing; Delhi is increasingly alarmed at China’s military build up. Is there enough space in the world for both India and China to develop peacefully? Which country is more open for business? And, with India’s population expected to become the largest in the world by 2028, will India become a global power to rival the US as well as China?
Alan Rosling spent 5 years as Executive Director of Tata Sons Limited, where he was responsible for the Group’s internationalisation policy (2003-2008). In this period the group’s overseas business grew from $2.4 billion (24% of total revenues) to $38 billion (60%).
