| Description: | From Daedalus to Dan Dare to Daedalus: How seriously can we take the prospect of Interstellar Travel?
The BIS had a long history of innovation from its beginning, so having seen its early predictions become reality in the heady space exploration days of the 1960s and 70s, a group of its members lead by Alan Bond decided to investigate whether the step from interplanetary towards interstellar exploration would be possible with the technology feasible or envisageable in the late 1970s. The project Daedalus that resulted became a by-word for ambitious forward-looking speculative technology. With the hindsight of 30 plus more years, how have their ideas fared, and have newer ideas superceded their technological assumptions? As a new group look again at Daedalus’ goals with the updated Project Icarus, is it time to re-evaluate how far we are from the science fiction dream of travelling to the stars? The dream has found renewed life of late in our discoveries of new worlds “out there”: it might come as a surprise how much we already know about some of them.
