| Description: | Shalini Bhat, who did her Masters in Fine Art (Painting) from Boston University, graduated in Fine Art (Painting) from Sir J.J.School of Fine Art, Mumbai. She won the MFA Grant Award from The Joan Mitchell Foundation, New York (2006-07) and Gold Medal for Painting from Sir J.J.School of Art. A Constantine Alajalov Fellow of Boston University (2004-06), she also received the Merit Scholarship from Sir J.J.School of Art (1999-2004). She has exhibited works in India, Indonesia, US and UK so far.
Existing in two worlds at the same time, one tends to carry one’s home in spite of any physical dislocation. The notion of home sweet home and how culture grows around it, the emergence of attachments and what it evolves into when the very roots are dislocated, the ambivalent state of what to retain and what to let go, the constant juggling between the duos of beliefs and experiences, holy truths and existing facts, society and individuality, pain and pleasure are some things that interests me a lot. As I paint certain paradoxes, incongruities, misinterpretations, I am also trying to fill in my own lacuna regarding the understanding of my roots. It is also osmosis of cultures that one will find in my work. |
