| Event Name: | FC Delius in conversation with Blake Morrison |
| Description: | Friedrich Christian Delius is one of the most critically acclaimed contemporary German writers. He talks to Blake Morrison about his book Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman (Bildnis der Mutter als junge Frau) which first appeared in German in 2006 and is now published in English, translated by Jamie Bulloch.
Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman provides a compelling portrayal of a young German during the Nazi era. A woman, pregnant with her first child, takes a walk through Rome one January afternoon in 1943. Innocent and naïve, the fighting exists for her as little more than a day-dream – until she realizes that her husband might never return. Through the medium of a single sentence the reader pieces together the heroine’s emerging understanding of war.
