| Event Name: | Foyle Reading Room Showcase Women travellers |
| Description: | Explore women’s early involvement with the Society through the lives of three intrepid women travellers who between them explored America, the Far East, Africa and the Middle East. Isabella Bird, said to have helped spark the ‘Ladies question’, and one of the first women elected in 1892, Mary Kingsley a deliberate non-Fellow, and Gertrude Bell, 1917 Society medal winner. Touching on these women’s backgrounds we explore their travels and the pressures and demands Victorian society placed on women.
