| Event Name: | GoToJail: The Cell Project |
| Description: | Gotojail involves the siting of a replica prison cell in public situations. It is constructed to the exact specifications and materials that would be found in a contemporary UK prison, down to the stainless steel toilet and the prison mattress. It also houses, on certain days, a prisoner.
Wander into the cell between 2pm and 7pm to view the conditions experienced by around 86,000 prisoners on a daily basis. The prisoner - or prisoners - occupying the cell 'in role' have themselves spent time inside. Visitors are welcomed as if into their home, where the fictional Tony and Ben are serving their sentences. The prisoners are happy to talk about any aspect of prison life or what took them into it. You are also invited to engage in a digital interface outside the cell, and give your opinion on the length of time Tony and Ben should be serving, and the in-cell privileges they should be allowed.
'Brilliant idea, brilliantly executed to provoke public thinking and conversations about prison, and what works, what doesn't, what's right, what's wrong.' (visitor comment)
'Very enlightening. Everyone should see this display and not continue to ruminate on stereotypes and prejudices they and society hold.' (visitor comment)
