| Event Name: | Joint Lunch with JCCI: The Economics of the Arab Spring, The Rt Hon The Lord Malloch-Brown |
| Description: | The changes during the last year, in Egypt Tunisia and Libya, combined with the unrest in Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Iran and elsewhere in the region are likely to have significant effects. Few of these countries have regained stability and the economic effects will be felt for many years. The areas are wealthy and of key importance to us all; Japanese and British interests in the oil-rich Gulf are enormous and Lord Malloch-Brown will provide insight based on his experiences as Deputy Secretary General at the United Nations and Minister in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Lord Malloch-Brown was Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 2007 to 2009 and had responsibility for Africa, Asia and the United Nations. After leaving the government in October 2009, he went into private business and now also serves as Chairman of The Royal African Society. His earlier career was in journalism, as a development specialist and communications consultant and, until 2006, he was a highly regarded Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and then the United Nations Deputy Secretary General.
Following a two-course lunch, Lord Malloch-Brown will speak for about 20 minutes, after which there will be time for questions. The event will end by 2.30pm.
