| Event Name: | London fashion, the East India Company and the Astronomer Royal |
| Description: | A Discover Debate Create event for people with a visual impairment
At the National Maritime Museum, Queen’s House
A day consisting of three separate activities:
10.30-11.30: Discover more about the clothes of the Royal Astronomer Nevil Maskelyne through a textile handling session. Maskelyne held the post of Astronomer Royal 1764-1811. While in residence at the Royal Observatory he married in 1785, and his daughter Margaret was born in 1786.
12.00-13.00: Debate and discuss the impact the East India Company had on textiles and fashion. The Maskelynes were a typical middle-class London family and Maskelyne's extensive journal entries show us the impact that the East India Company had on their lives. Their diets included green and black teas and coconuts, and their clothes show us the changing fashion in London and how the East India Company brought in objects of desire such as vibrantly stripped silks, and sheer, floating muslins.
14.15-15.45: Create a textile-based artistic response to the sessions. |
