Description:	Following success with his stage production Peter Brook re-created for the screen Peter Weiss’ extraordinary play The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum at Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. Infamous sexual explorer the Marquis de Sade is incarcerated in Paris’ notorious Charenton mental hospital where he is allowed to direct the other inmates in a play based on the life and assassination of the politician and writer Jean-Paul Marat. As the play progresses the patients become increasingly possessed by the violence of the play which spirals into disturbed chaos. Inspired by Jacques-Louis David’s iconic painting La Mort de Marat, an astonishing ensemble piece emerged asking the deepest questions about politics, violence and sexual freedom.
