Elgar Cello Concerto
Walton Symphony No 1
Paul Daniel conductor
Natalie Clein cello
National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain
Elgar composed the elegiac Cello Concerto in 1919 from his secluded Sussex cottage where he had spent nights listening to the ominous sounds of World War I artillery rolling across the channel. Walton’s Symphony No 1 charts the composer’s tempestuous love affair with Baroness Imma von Doernberg. However, it was Walton’s new relationship with Alice Wimborne that provided inspiration for its ardent finale. |
