| Event Name: | Reforming Mental Health Care Services in Russia: Challenges and Obstacles |
| Description: | Following on from his article published in the East-West Review - Summer Issue, 2011, Robert van Voren will talk about the huge challenges and obstacles to be overcome in developing and reforming mental health services in Russia. The regime of the former USSR was notorious for its abuse of psychiatry, which it used to silence Soviet dissidents, as he described in his article and in the two full-length studies he has published on this subject. Hence, there is a mountain to climb to rid the mental health services in Russia of this inglorious past and develop services fit for modern society in the vastly changed Russia of today.
Robert van Voren (1959) is a Sovietologist by education. A graduate of Amsterdam University, he obtained his PhD at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas (Lithuania) where he currently teaches political science and directs the Center for Soviet, post-Soviet and European Studies. He is also Director of the Center for Cold War Studies and visiting professor at Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Starting in 1977, he became active in the Soviet human rights movement. For many years he travelled to the USSR as a courier. In 1980 he co-founded the International Association on Political Use of Psychiatry and became its General Secretary in 1986. He is still Chief Executive of its successor organization, the Global Initiative on Psychiatry.
Van Voren has written extensively on Soviet issues, the Second World War, and issues related to mental health and human rights. He has published a dozen books, the latest are On Dissidents and Madness (2009) and Cold War in Psychiatry (2010), published by Rodopi. His book Undigested Past - the Holocaust in Lithuania has just been published, also by Rodopi.
