Linden says:
This is the only one of our California series to stray from the heart of Napa, to the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the stamp of that high altitude terroir is obvious – Californian Cabernet richness meets the cool freshness of mountain fruit. The third magic ingredient here is Paul Draper, who joined in 1968. It was a superb choice. His 1970 is a highly desirable and rare collectors’ wine, sometimes compared – favourably – to Bordeaux’s great classic of that vintage, Château Latour. His 1971 featured in the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and won the 2006 30th Anniversary tasting outright. That seems fitting given most fans agree Monte Bello is a slow developer in the cellar. Quality has never waivered and so it will be a treat to taste through five decades of this great wine.
