Thomas Berry The survival of our species requires, among other things, a healthier balance between Yin and Yang, Feminine and Masculine, energies. The Goddess has been returning to Western consciousness for decades through the women’s movement, feminist scholarship, Goddess rediscoveries, and more. We will explore some of the rich and hopeful implications of that achievement with special emphasis on the return of the Black Madonna. It is also time to resurrect the “sacred masculine” as well so that the Goddess may have a proper consort. Much of what passes for masculinity in our culture and religion is anything but sacred. It is toxic, and this toxicity affects not only men but also women in their roles as mothers, sisters, spouses, and human beings. You are invited to join us this evening for an exploration of the sacred masculine and divine feminine. How can we invite this sacred marriage into our own lives and into the world at large. “The human venture depends absolutely on this quality of awe and reverence and joy in the Earth and all that lives and grows upon the Earth,” he writes. “In the end the universe can only be explained in terms of celebration. It is all an exuberant expression of existence itself…. A way is opening for each person to receive the total spiritual heritage of the human community as well as the total spiritual heritage of the universe. Within this context the religious antagonisms of the past can be overcome, the particular traditions can be vitalized, and the feeling of presence to a sacred universe can appear once more to dynamize and sustain human affairs.” - Matthew Fox Matthew Fox Matthew Fox is a radical theologian, spiritual activist, and founder of Creation Spirituality. As an activist Fox’s interests have been the renewal of education and of religion. He established the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality that flourished for 21 years until Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) silenced Fox and eventually shut down the program and expelled Fox from the Dominican Order of which he had been a member for 34 years. Fox then founded his own University in downtown Oakland, the University of Creation Spirituality Fox is recipient of the Abbey Courage of Conscience Peace Award (other recipients being the Dali Lama, Mother Teresa, Ernesto Cardenal and Rosa Parks), the Ghandi King Ikeda Award, the Tikkun National Ethics Award and other awards. He is currently visiting scholar at the Academy of the Love of Learning in Santa Fe, New Mexico and lives in Oakland, California. He has written 30 books that have been translated into 43 languages and have received numerous awards. Among them are Original Blessing, The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, A Spirituality Named Compassion, The Reinvention of Work, The Hidden Spirituality of Men and Christian Mystics. He has contributed much to the rediscovery of Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart and Thomas Aquinas as pre-modern mystics and prophets.
