Linden says:
Warren Winiarski’s timing was impeccable. The first Cabernet from his vineyard at Stag’s Leap in the heart of Napa was from the dismal 1972 vintage. However, his 1973 caused a sensation when it won Steven Spurrier’s Judgment of Paris’ competition in 1976, trumping both Mouton and Haut-Brion 1970. Marketing his new venture ceased to be an issue! With the superb 1974 vintage came the first special bottling of a single cask – cask number 23 – singled out for its special qualities. I fought tooth and nail to secure Graham Lyons’ immaculate bottles of this. The core of our tasting focuses on the flagship Cask 23: 2001, 1999, 1997, 1995, 1994, 1992, 1991, 1985, 1984, and 1974. In addition we shall try some other early rarities from the Graham Lyons cellar: Stag’s Leap Vineyard ‘Lot 2’ Cabernet Sauvignon 1978, 1976 and 1975 as well as the wine that provided that leap to fame (oh dear!), the Stag’s Leap Vineyard 1973.
