| Description: | Irina Bradley is a Prosopon master icon painter, she is currently doind her doctoral research at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts. The Russian theologian Prince Eugene Trubetskoy once called icons “theology in colour”. Icons can be likened to the Scriptures; you can read them on various levels and like the Scriptures they were not meant to be understood merely literally. Icon painting is a sacred language, where a higher meaning is conveyed through traditional forms and colours and every step of the technique carries out a special meaning. Irina will be talking from iconographer’s perspective, where the process of preparing pigments and painting an icon is not reduced to mere technicalities, the materials are transformed in order to reveal a spiritual dimension and how every step of icon painting can be philosophically explained. She will also explore the solar origin of the icon mysticism, the concept of light and the symbolism of colour in the icon.
