This inspiring historical drama is about the 1825 uprising in Russia, which pitted young military officers who opposed the system of serfdom against the newly ascended Czar Nicholas I. Refusing to swear allegiance to him and the autocracy he represented, they eschewed the comfort they were accustomed to and pursued the liberal values. Their heroic uprising was crushed, however, and the leaders were either executed or sent to Siberian labour camps. The wives of these valiant soldiers abandoned their luxurious lifestyles to follow their husbands, choosing against the aristocracy in favour of a life that put their bodies, minds, and spirits to the test.
Beautifully acted and filmed, featuring unforgettable score, this story of love, betrayal and sacrifice has become one of the must see classics.
