| Event Name: | Wings into Space |
| Description: | Why did the Shuttle configuration look the way it did? We take a whistle-stop tour of winged space-planes, from Saenger to the Shuttle, via von Braun’s delta-winged space ferry, the X-15 and DynaSoar, with information obtained from Shuttle Orbiter flights as to how these earlier designs would have fared, had they been built. Every last Orbiter flight was a research mission probing unknown areas of the envelope and in standing down the Shuttle we have lost more than a transportation system. In this lecture we look at how the Shuttle was used as a research platform and how it pioneered an entirely new area of winged space flight. Lessons we will need for tomorrow’s generation of space-planes, including those applied now with the US Air Force X-37B and, of course, Skylon! |
