| Event Name: | Writing Photography With Simon Watney Stopping Down: Photography, Education, Loss |
| Description: | An evening with the journal Photography & Culture.
Simon Watney has been involved in British photography in a wide variety of ways since he began teaching on the influential degree course at the Polytechnic of Central London in 1976.
In this talk Watney reflects on some of the changes in British photogaphic education, his work and friendships with Angela Carter, Eve Sedgwick, Jo Spence, Derek Jarman and others, and his influential work in the early years of HIV. His illustrated talk is followed by a discussion with writer and editor of Photography & Culture Kathy Kubicki.
A prolific writer and cultural theorist, Simon Watney is currently a part time teacher on the MA programme at UCA (Farnham). He also teaches art history to apprentice stonemasons for the Cathedral Workshops Fellowship, and is advisor on monuments to the London Diocesan Advisory Committee.
This year long Writing Photography series aims to investigate different approaches to writing about photography both creatively and academically.
